Saturday, January 24, 2009 COLOURED.
today is chinese new year's eve, in other words also known as 'da nian ye'. today is the day where small red packets of cash are ought to be given to each child from every single member of the family. last night an american friend of mine asked how my day was. i told him that i was really excited about cny, not answering his question unintentionally. he asked what was so special about it and i briefly explained to him some of the traditions - family gathering dinner, firecrackers, especially heavily emphasising the laicee. surprisingly, he's never heard of the term 'lai-cee or red packets or hong bao' so i told him what it was then began to explain to him the story behind it, but he seemed disinterested and was in a rush to leave msn anyways due to his own personal reasons. however before he left, he kept teasing me that we get laice/lice for new years. i kept insisting that its lai-CEE but then in the end he said something cause he wanted to have to last say. i knew that it was supposed to be a joke but it still hurt regardless- "no one fucking cares about chinese new years apart from the chinese". this statement he made struck me that some people can be so patriotic towards their own country, that they could become so ignorant and be oblivious to their surrounding; considering that my friend lived in china, the core of asia. what im trying to say is that people need to be more opening minded and consider about other people and more importantly their culture. im not saying dont mess with their tradition, but know where the line is and never cross it; what was ment to be a harmless joke can turnaround other people's perception towards you. cause seriously, not only did you just insult them but you also insulted their family/generations, enthicity and way of life. or maybe im just getting carried away here haha.
i forgive you man, but honestly you just dont say stuff like that. its not funny
off to a lighter topic, im waiting for the mahjong madness to begin ;) been aniticipating for a whole year for this sleepless night
